Forgetting to sign in: A solution

People are continually forgetting to sign-in to the website before they post a message, leading to them posting yet another one along the lines of "that anonymous was me" immediately after.

The reason for this would probably be poor User Interface design. Due to limitations I need to work with, there isn't much I can do to fix this.

However, any ideas and suggestions that you may have are appreciated as it's possible that something you say may lead to a proper solution.

In the meantime, I suspect that the 100% guaranteed way to make sure people post only when they are signed-in is to block anonymous posts entirely. The problem with this is that it makes the site a bit more closed, and less accessible to new users. If someone has to create an account to post, they are likely to not even bother.

So I'm asking for your opinions on this. Should forum posts be restricted to signed-in users only?

what about a simple warning right before you post

"At first, this completely shocked me. Then I found a neat picture of a bunny and posted it at the top of the article. Hello there, bunny!"

I find I'm only signed out when my Firefox updates, perhaps even add-ons too.

How about a message that says something to the effect of "Sign in to comment!" with an OKAY button that leads you to the register page. If you allow sign-in without validation emails, that would do a number on saving the issue (but may open you up to spam bots).

Does the site keep a record of IPs? If so, if we have an anonymous user that has a similar IP to another user it could ask if it's you, or let you know that you haven't signed in.

Or instead, another "sign in" dialogue near the Post button if you're anonymous to reduce chances of it being unnoticed if you're a member but not intrusive if you aren't.

I can find out the IP address of anonymous users, but I've hidden it from everyone else for privacy reasons. Some people might not want others to know their IP address.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think I can implement any of those exactly as you've suggested, but you've definitely given me some ideas to work on.

I think I have found a solution to this problem - when trying to post in the forum as an anonymous user you will see a similar message to the one that appears in the chatroom.

I've also made both messages (the new one in the forum, and the one that has been in the chatroom for a while) a bit more prominent so that they are easier to notice.

Let me know if this helps a bit … ?
